A Student Who Found Their Way

Dear Freshman,

My name is Asia Blakely and I have completed my first year of College. When I first began at Cal St LA, I didn't know what to expect. Although I was familiar with the campus because, both my mother and father had attended,  I still needed help with direction. Looking back now one thing I wish I would have known would be where the counselors office was located. There were many times when I needed to talk to someone about my classes and I didn't know where to go. Now that I reached the end of my first year; I have seen my counselor twice and she is very helpful. Throughout the quarters I wish I would have known where the financial aid office was, because dealing with them on the phone can take forever and sometimes they don't know how to help you. There are many things I can list for you to do in order to have a successful freshman year, but you have to create your own path.

During the beginning of my first year, I was placed in both remedial Math and English. When I first thought about it, I was upset and felt that I didn't need to be in those classes. Actually, the classes such like; English 101 and college level math help prepare you for what is to come once you're in college level courses. It is important also, that if you are placed in remedial, you must complete them within your first year or else you will be disenrolled, but don't worry I'm sure you can accomplish it. As I moved forward with my other classes, I had to find balance and made sure that I stayed on top of my grades because, now you are your best advocate.

While attending school, I've come to understand many things about how College may not be always what it seems. In a way I thought it was parties all the time and hanging out with friends, and enjoying life. Now I had to learn that there are no parties every weekend because, you need that time to study and do homework especially for those who are taking over twelve units. My first year was exciting but, also challenging. There were times I wanted to give up but I continued because I wanted to make my family proud. There were times I would meet new people and I felt as if I fit in. College is a whole new environment and you have to know how to adapt.

I am writing to Inform you that, College is a place to explore, built,  and enjoy the memories you make. The best advice I can give you is never give up, never take no as an answer from a teacher, stay on top of your studies, and most of all make sure you have a balance for personal life. I hope from reading this you will learn from what I had to do and complete your first year. I wish you the best of luck

                                                                                                                             Sincerely, Asia Blakely
