Out of your Comfort Zone

Dear CSULA freshman,
In college you will be experiencing a transformation and each quarter will change you for the better. College can be scary I made a list of things that will be helpful to the incoming freshman. One thing to understand is that you have to take the difficult decisions in college; no one is going to make these decisions for us like in high school. If you are absent, the professors will not ask questions, but they assume that you care enough to go to their office hours to understand what you missed that day. Email your instructor constantly for any question. Have good communication with your professors and go to their office hours. There were some things that I would have wanted to know my first day.
On the first day of class, the teachers give their students a syllabus with all the due dates. I suggest that you get a planner and write in every assignment that is due. I had a highlighter color for each class so I knew what assignment was due for what class. I also suggest you not to procrastinate; the quarter goes by fast. When I started my first quarter, I was afraid to get lost on this campus. Then I learned that the only way to get comfortable with the school was to walk into different buildings. This will help you understand the different programs in the school and offer you great opportunities. The school has a program to help students with time management. Learning the different programs that are at our finger tips is one step closer to a better college experience.  I entered the first year experience (FYE) program. This program gave me great information about CSULA and was there when I needed extra help. I felt comfortable to talk to my FYE leader Uriel Serrano. He was a normal student that has been in our shoes and very willing to help.  Just remember that the experience gets better each day. Get involved and get attached to the school by joining clubs or a sorority. Study and don’t procrastinate, but don’t forget to have fun. Welcome to CSULA.
