Incoming Cal State Los Angeles freshman
making it to the first year of college is only the beginning. We all have
different expectations about college but at the end we all have one goal and
it’s to graduate. Having that ambition to do well in school comes natural, and
that’s because we all dream of having a successful future. The advice I will
give to you on your first year of college is to stay positive and never give
up. There would be high expectations from your college professors and that is
because they are the ones who want to see you become someone in life. The work
will be different and challenging at times but don’t be afraid to ask for help.
CSULA has tutoring centers that will help you in any subject. The professors
have office hours and they are there to help you, so take advantage of the
opportunities that come your way. Talking to your classmates is a way to get
away from the fear of feeling like you are on your own. It’s a good thing to
get to meet new people and stay in contact because they could be good help when
you miss class and need notes from lectures. This first year can be the best if
you are open minded and willing to get involved. There are many groups and
organizations that are offered to the students, such as the ASI (student government).
ASI has held many major events like movie nights, museum trips, snowboarding
etc. You get to do events that get people on campus involved. Getting involved
gets you references when needed are referred to others as a great person
because of what you bring to the school.
My
first year at CSULA was different from what I was thinking before I started.
This school was my first choice and it was an amazing feeling when I got the
acceptance letter. The first time I sat inside the classroom I was happy of
thinking I had made that far. When the professor walked in I felt a different
vibe surrounding the class and there was complete silence. I got nervous and
wondered if it was going to be like that for the rest of the quarter. As the
second week came, my classmates were getting to know each other and the vibes
changed from awkwardness to a happy classroom environment. There was motivation
and help from each other like peer reviews for essay revision and getting into discussion
groups. The feeling was good and that’s when I knew that communication was the
key to having a college social life. Outside from school we all have our
comfort zone, but as for me college has made me a person who can talk more
without being shy or nervous. I do wish you all an amazing year and don’t
forget “Don’t wish it were easier, wish you were better. Don’t wish for fewer
problems, wish for more skills. Don’t wish for less challenges, wish for more
wisdom.” - Earl Shoaf
Sincerely,
Andrea Munoz
