Recipe for Success: How to Survive Your Freshman Year

Dear Freshman,

Congratulation! You’ve just begun your first year of college here at California State University of Los Angeles. I’m sure you may be nervous or wondering what to expect, much like I was when I first started out. As I finish up my first semester here, I have developed a recipe that will guarantee you a successful time in college.

First, start by making sure you add at least eight hours of sleep into your daily schedule. If you get any less you will begin to find yourself falling asleep in class and falling behind in your studies. Next, make sure to step out of your shell and make new friends. Whether you meet them in class, in a club, or even in the food court, it is always nice to see a friendly face around campus. You can follow this step up by inviting your new friends to grab lunch or a coffee at one of the many cafes we have. I personally recommend going to King Coffee in King Hall if you want a latte done right.

Just as you may substitute certain ingredients in a recipe, I suggest to switch any of your old procrastination tendencies you may have had in high school and fill your time here at CSULA by spending time studying and getting involved with clubs and associations on campus. CSULA allows you to join many different types of organizations. You can join clubs that focus around your major and your favorite hobbies. I also encourage you to start your own club if you are not interested in any that we currently offer. It is extremely important to stay on top of homework and projects so you can attend events such as your favorite sports games, guest speakers, and farmers markets. It will also make preparing for finals a lot easier and stress free.

By following this simple recipe your freshman year will be a piece of cake!

                                                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                                                            A Freshman
