Save money. Work hard. Cal State LA

Dear Freshman,
College is a big transition in our lives, it is the number one reason to why many people get nervous and scared about their first day, but i was actually excited. So many people of all ages, teens, young adults, full grown adults and seniors, are here to become academically successful. People are always rushing to class or walking out of school to go home. Considering that college is expensive, it is best to know how to save your money from going to waste. If you prefer to use public transportation, I recommend to get the Upass to save money instead of having to use $1.75 everyday or having to reload your tap card. If they sell out then apply for a monthly pass through metro. I travel through metro without worrying about having change or if I am running out of money in my card. When constantly having to print out assignments ink is expensive to buy every few months or so, but in school you can print for only 10 cents per page! I find this a good deal. I was surprised from the beginning that I am able to put money in my card. Now I go to the machine in the library on the first floor or in annex link near Salazar Hall to insert one or five dollars. Then I either print my assignments in the library or from annex link when necessary. During your break when wanting to grab a bite it is best to consider that the food from campus is expensive. I do pamper myself once in awhile with the delicious food from the food trucks or from the farmers markets, but I always bring my lunch to school to save my money for future expenses such as books and supplies.
In high school you most likely had the taste of college by having to sleep late and being assigned so much homework and tests. However do not panic, for college you might think or were told it is worse, but it actually is not. You will have the chance to choose your own schedule that suits you and have time between your breaks to complete your assignments. I make sure my classes do not interfere with the days I attend church and I make sure I will have time to study or complete my assignments. When enrolling to classes it is best to make a plan B or even a C schedule because it is common for classes to be full before your enrollment day. To stay organized I keep things noted in my planner, it is perfect to keep track of deadlines and to not have to write them down on random sheets of paper in my notebook. Also to be on the safe side, I transfer all the important dates from my agenda to my calendar because I am usually a forgetful person and it never hurts to be careful and precise. For my assignments, I start on them the day they are assigned to me, that is if I am not busy that day. I do not like stressing out on it on the last minute, so it is always good to start on them early. I divide my time into putting work that way I'm not rushing on assignments. For my assignments I do my best to complete them but if I am having trouble. I would go to my professor’s office hours after my last class. Visiting your professors might seem like too much work or a waste of time, but I recommend it because it is very helpful and plus you get to know your professor better. Throughout the times of going to my chemistry professor’s hours, I have seen so many students visit him as well, which means you will need the help from your professor. Seeing him helped me improve on my calculations and understanding the content from a lesson. Make it a habit to visit your professors because it will benefit you throughout college.

Sincerely,

Former Freshman
